Located just 25 km. west from Malaga airport, you can reach Fuengirola from the airport by taxi (about 35 euros straight to your Fuengirola hotel or apartment), bus (going to Malaga city then to Fuengirola, about 7 euros) or by train (100 mts. outside the airport, about 2 euros). The train & bus station in Fuengirola is located in the town centre and less than a houndred meters from the beach, just as most of our hotels and holiday apartments for letting in Fuengirola are.
The train services all towns & cities along the coast between Fuengirola and Málaga city. You may use this service to visit all the nearby resorts or to get to the airport or to Malaga's RENFE Railway station, from which you may take a train or bus to almost everywhere in Spain (or Europe), or to Malaga's "Alameda" station which drops you off just in town centre.
If you are getting a rental car in Fuengirola, just follow the directions to Cadiz, right out from the airport turn right, take the "Autovia del Mediterraneo (A7/E-15)" and you'll be there in a matter of minutes. Have a look at our Fuengirola's map so you can locate yourself more easily.
Fuengirola was founded by the phoenicians, though it's belived to have been an ibero settlement before. It has been mentioned in ancient greek literature by Plinio and Ptolomeo as a beautiful fortified town between Malaca & Salduba (Malaga & Marbella). Roman presence was very important and became a "fedarate city", even some archelogical findings have been made, including a statue of the roman godess "Venus", the well-known baths, a salt fish factory, and some other architectonic ruins that you may visit during your stay.
During Al-Andalus, a fortress was constructed to prevent pirates from robbing the city, but it was ultimately a fire that destroyed the city of Suhayl (Fuengirola's moorish name). The place remained abandoned untill the threat of the Turkish and Moroccan pirates ceased after Al-Andalus was reconquered by the Spanish crown and eventually the name of the city was changed to Font-Jirola after a spring that rised from the foot of the castle. then at the begininng of the 18th century a small inn was opened near the beach offering accomodation, a few huts were built and the actual town of Fuengirola was born.
